Pet Peeve ~ Flying Carpets

So you are asking yourself, whats this crazy decorating fool mean by "Flying Carpets?" I mean rugs that fly right into your face! Carpets that are, or almost are, the focal of a space.
So much of design is ones own personal opinion. But I have never liked the focus to be on the floor . . . why would you want to take someone eyes to the floor when entering a room?

Whenever I come across such a space, I wonder . . . am I the only one that thinks something is off here ? I wonder, because I have never read or heard anyone say that this is a design "No No".

That is until this past week , when I read it!! Rose Tarlow, and I quote, "Use carpets as background only, never as the focus of a room". So tell me , is it just Rose and I ? How do you feel about "Flying Carpets?"

  1. I suppose if you are trying to hide something higher up, using the carpet as a focal point might work. Otherwise, I'm with you, I just don't get it.

  2. Never thought about carpets at all; we notice them only when they blind us.

  3. Love the graphic design carpet, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who had not experienced the wonders of IKEA!

  4. You know, I didn't read your post carefully enough. I really like the brown and white graphic designed carpet, but now that you mention it, it would probably be better on a smaller scale so it didn't become quite as much of the focal point. And I'm definitely not a fan of the target shaped number! But on the whole I don't mind a bold carpet that gets your attention (just probably not in my own house).

  5. I absolutely know nothing, but I too don't care for a jump up in your face rug. The rugs are pretty, but they just don't quite look right. Where would you use these busy rugs?

  6. You hit the bullseye on this target! I am never a fan of a busy carpet and I am not really a fan of the zebra rug either. It looks lovely in some homes, but it wouldn't be my thing, and not in that application. ~ Robyn

  7. LOL! I have one as the main page of my blog. It's a herringbone design I got from the Wallmart website. I wanted something that would never show the "dog dirt". HA!
It really works, but I gota tell you... I'm not sure I really like it. I can't make it work with anything. It's a bit much.

  8. Some of those are bit over the top. Like the skin on the sisal. What's with two carpets? I think a rug can make a statement in a room but it has to be the centre of attention. Many of these images have so much going on you really need a bland floor covering to rest the eye. Maybe that's what the problem is, just too much design. If you are going to use a rug as a statement, let everything else work with the rug not against it. There are some beautiful rugs out there.

  9. I'm with you. I don't get BLING carpets. Some can be too over the top and overwhelming. I prefer to be Under-whelmed by my floor coverings.

  10. Those zebra rugs are all over the place lately! I agree, especially with the pictures you are using as examples. It seems like everything else is neutral and background to the rug/carpet. I think it should enhance the decor, not hog it.

  11. O!
    Ouch!
    Agreed.
These are all a bit too much.
The 1st one literally looks like it could fly away.

  12. I so agree with you! Why would anyone want the floor to be a focal point. I think a floor should lay quietly in the background, not be shouting at you the moment you walk into the room. That zebra rug is just too much, but I like the last image, it echoes the colors, but not too loudly. Have a great day, my friend. Hugs, Cindy S.

  13. Hi Vicky,

Some of those rugs were awful. But in my opinion (just my opinion) I deplore zebra rugs. How can anyone have one? Skinning a zebra? Why? It would make me cry everytime I looked at it.

  14. With you once again...I think each of the rooms above would be MUCH nicer without the "in-your-face" rugs.

  15. I have to agree...that third picture is such a lovely dining room but all you see is the busy rug!

  16. That bullseye carpet does something physical to me...eeks! I think I agree with you and Rose. I have seen it work beautifully the other way though. Great choice of images!

  17. VBvc If you look at all the rooms, the walls are white,or near it. If you can't have fun with the color of the walls, why not have a little fun with other things in the room. I like the factthey had some fun with their rooms. The one with the beams needed something to bring your eye to the floor. Do you think their decorator gets paid high bucks for doing the normal.Even the decorating showes have things everyone dosen't agree with. Have fun with it. Can you imagin the pope saing " I thik the ceiling is a little busy" To Mical Angelo. hehe Kathy

  18. Good point Kathy, I love that you will make me stop and think , but on this one, we will have to agree to disagree. And this is my blog, so I win...hehehehe

  19. I am standing on your side of the street on this one. The rugs make the rooms too busy and incites only chaos in my little brain. I'd rather slide into a room that's a cocoon of warmth...not a riot of shapes and color. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE color...just not so much that it makes me run in the opposite direction. I think you can have pattern and color in a rug, but use restraint so as not to overwhelm the room. Why spend so much on fabric and furniture only to have it blend away in a saturated, graphic rug??

  20. flying carpets should task a hike ...right on down the road ...

  21. Hi Room Service
I'm very much with you on this one! Great post!

  22. I agree! Area carpets should accent, not overpower. Bold graphic rugs are great but not if the furniture can't hold them down!

  23. Never heard them described that way, your good!! Oh,and for what its worth...I hate them too, they are like an overdressed woman showing off aren't they? Hope you are well,Chrissy

  24. * BULLSEYE, kiddo! You're right on target! (You AND that "can't-miss-the-target" type rug~ now THAT's "fun", yes, but O*N*L*Y for a PHOTO OP... not for R*E*A*L homes!!!)~

Now Vicky-girl, it's only MY humble opinion, but PERSONALLY, I've found that the MOST NEUTRAL BACKGROUNDS translate to being able to "change looks" often. And, since I am SO FICKLE & LOVE a "bit ' change", the more neutral background, the more "play space" I have! And THAT, I LOVE too!

    XOXO,
    Linda *

  25. So true Linda! I like that too, the ability to change it up. Thanks everyone for the comments...you know, I blog for comments!

  26. I agree! That last pic has the most gorgeous chandelier and fixture but you don't even look at it because that floor drags your eye to it.

  27. I have to admit I love the graphic black and white rug, but the bullseye? It seems to be moving!

  28. aw, don't ask me, I just like boring old seagrass. and zebra.

  29. I feel they are gorgeous graphics BUT.....are a tad way too much for the space(s) shown here.

  30. I dont think it really matters. In decorating there are no rules unless you are on commission.
